Well, I posted this in the main "PS3 Bounce Back" thread, but feel it deserves a bit more space for itself.

Sony today took the decision to blackball well known games blog service Kotaku.com. The reason, a simple rumour published regarding the potential "Playstation Home" add on. Check that story here.

Basically, the PSH sounds a lot like the Mii system, but with the added whistles and bells we expect from Sony. Specifically, you can play games, achieving certain goals to recieve items to furnish a room for your living avatar (which I cannot resist calling the PS-Mii, for obvious reasons).

As you will see in the article, Kotaku stated that the story was a rumour, their source was anonymous, but they had done their research. This was not enough for Sony, and when they got wind of the story, they requested that Kotaku did not publish it. First nicely, and then not so much. A simple threat was handed to Kotaku: You publish the story, and you lose us.

More accurately: they would be forced to return their debug PS3, uninvited from all meetings scheduled with Sony at the upcoming GDC, relationships and ties to Phil Harrison would be no more Sony would ultimately have nothing more to do with Kotaku.

To cut it short: "What's it to be, Kotaku? Your reputation or our support?"

As detailed in the follow up story, Sony were informed by Kotaku that the rumour story would be run, and upon its publication an email arrived at Kotaku from SCEA's senior director of corporate communications. To read it in full, click here.

Not only does Sony's over the top reaction to a rumour endorse the story, but it shows just how strange Sony's PR strategy is atm. Sony are going all out to destroy their public image, and hitting the headlines like this is not going to help matters.

Personally, I applaud Kotaku for 1- Sticking to its guns and publishing what was no more than a rumour at the time and 2- Being so dignified in their e-mail response. As an aspiring jouranlist, I do not believe for a second that we should be played like puppets just for the big corporations. Journalists have a job to report "the news" and that can come from anywhere. If it comes as a leak, they have a right to publish it. A simple "We don't comment on rumours" could've ended the matter, and the story could have gone published virtually unnoticed. There was no reason for Sony to get all heavy handed, and now they have tarnished their image further and alienated a great number of people. Sony fanboys, good luck defending this one.

Sony: You're just digging yourselves a deeper and deeper hole. I have more issues with the Playstation Home format, but that is an issue to sit elsewhere.

Apologies to all those who didn't care for a freedom of the press rant, but it is here now, so please share your views.

Well said. I can't believe what sony is thinking with....
What are they exactly trying to achieve with this? It seems like they got an idea which are based on the Mii but have to make it look like their idea so nobody can call them copies. Well.. That worked rather bad...

The issue here really isn't the Playstation Home though, Fluesopp. Although they are clearly ripping off Nintendo (again) and Microsoft with it.

The issue for me is the fact that Sony are pissed they cant pull the strings of a popular site and control its output as they would dearly like to.

Journalists are not Sony's (or anyone's) little poodles who will only pump out what they approve of. I don't even see why Sony kicked up such a stink with this. It could have been an inconsequential rumour, with the only issue being their blatant hijacking of the Mii's. I am more disappointed in Sony than you could ever imagine for trying to silence Kotaku the way they did.

Ultimately, this demonstrates how out of touch with the media and the gamers Sony now are. They believe they can control everything, because they are Sony. They are wrong.

Kotaku will continue to thrive following this, while Sony will slip deeper and deeper into the steaming pile of filth they are currently up to their necks in.

If this rumour had been false, then I can see why Sony have a problem with it being published, however, if it turns out to be true, then they just don't want somebody else publishing this information before they can do it officially.

The actions of Sony surely confirm this rumour as 99% true now. Kotaku burst their "big reveal" for the GDC, obviously, but as I stated earlier, a simple "No comment" would have sufficed and people would have just mulled it over as a rumour for the next seven days. Sure there might have been a little upset and comparisons made to the Wii/360, but the fallout would have been nothing compared to what they will now face.

Sony are now not only a bunch of idea stealing hacks, but also a rather confused bunch of fools who are now assuming that they are bigger than God. They cannot control media output. Fact.

Sony=Fucking bastards
Kotaku was nicer to Sony than they should have.  If I was the one receiving that I would have Sony a new one. It is a frikin rumour not even confirmed or anything.  Only a bunch of idiots like Sony Corporation would do something this outrageous. Nintendo and Microsoft should pound Sony into the damn hole they're diggin themselves into.  They aren't even part of the console wars to me anymore. Bunch of bitches.

The weirdest thing is, apart from the whole ripping off Nintendo bit, this could have been the first bit of positive press Sony recieved in a very long time. Guess they didn't really want that...

I'm more convinced than ever they're deliberately trying to piss off the entire gaming community so they can get the hell out of it and have the media hub they've always dreamed of.

Sony's obviously in a sore spot, they've been doing nothing but grasping at straws trying to poke the competition from the bottom; meanwhile, outside of one comment about the line shootings from Reggie, and a few press releases, Nintendo's remained almost silent about the Wii's success.  And in competition, usually the winners are the ones who remain silent about the competition, while the losers make all the chatter, and Jesus Sony executives haven't shut up.  Hey, Sony, here comes the clue train, stop talking about all the stuff you're going to do and DO IT!

As for this Mii/Live rip off, it's a lot like Six-Axis, it's not a selling point, but Sony will use it as ammo.  The fact that Kotaku reported this and Sony "blacklisted" them is borderline hilarious, I think Kotaku's suddenly going to become a lot less pro-Sony, along with most of the major media.

Indeed Sony has always been on odds end.  I never understood why a company like Sony would become apart of the gaming community.  It is obvious now that they just wanted to piss us off from the beginig.
SEGA should return from the ashes of the Dreamcast!

Hey, Sony, here comes the clue train, stop talking about all the stuff you're going to do and DO IT!

Strangely enough, I'm posting one of these Sony's way in the morning...

The fact that Kotaku reported this and Sony "blacklisted" them is borderline hilarious, I think Kotaku's suddenly going to become a lot less pro-Sony, along with most of the major media.

The best part about travelling all the forums at a time like this is seeing all the different viewpoints, and better still are those of the PS fanboys who appear to be taking the angle of considering Sony's strong arm tactics as "a fair request", and Kotaku were always anti-Sony for the simple fact that they published nothing but "bad shit" about the PS3. I'm sorry, but if there was any good shit, Kotaku are the kind of people who'd have let us know by now.

Speaking of fanboys, at the time of posting, PS3Fanboy have yet to address the issue in much the same way as they ignored the "How You Killed Your Brand" video for a large part of last weekend- opting for that fantastic list of Blu Ray releases instead...

Looks like it's over before it began, and Sony realized what kind of a fuck up they made.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/sony/sony-and-kotaku-makeup-240922.php

Hey, at least they aren't that arrogant to keep them blackballed!  Personally, if I were Kotaku, I'd have just spat it back in their face, I'd do the same thing if it were Nintendo.  Too bad Kotaku didn't have the balls to stand up for something.

EDIT: JordAnime beat me to the punch in my own thread... Oh well...

Oh look... It's over already...

In a nutshell: The story remains up and Sony has re-invited us to the meetings and interviews initially scheduled for the Game Developers Conference.

I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that Sony figured out what a giant fuck up they had made and how quickly they needed to smooth things over. Yet another PR disaster to sweep under the carpet. IMO, the damage has been done, and I won't be forgetting this one in a hurry.

Freedom of the press- 1, Big ass corporations who think they can have it all- 0.

In response to your point about Sony not being arrogant, JA, I don't buy that. Sony needs sites like Kotaku. Kotaku is one of the biggest on the web, and if you lose that audience, you really are in one hell of a hole...

Feel free to generalise regarding freedom of the press now, folks, but consider this to be the most relevant case study we will see in a while.

That's what I meant, I mean they could have kept them blackballed for the sake of pride, but they didn't, which is a plus for them.  However, I don't think they gained any brownie points from either Kotaku or the blog-o-sphere, probably didn't really lower their standings with the casual gamer but they aren't buying PS3's anyway.

The past 3-4 hours show how fucked Sony's PR team are atm. Like the guy on Kotaku said, when that e-mail went up, "the Internet imploded". I wouldn't say that making up with Kotaku is a plus for them, it was all they could do to save their arses from getting burnt anymore than they already have.

It wasn't a smart move by some slick PR man that saved Sony in the end, it was the only move available, otherwise they would've been shafted for a good while to come.

Sony don't need a PR department anymore, they need a team specially trained in damage limitation. Heck, they might've already moved in methinks...

It's gonna be an interesting GDC for Sony. And not just as Mr Harrison tries to dispell the idea of the PSMiiLive and present it as something revolutionary... (Resisting the urge to start a thread to discuss it further. Might as well wait til its actually revealed- its sure to be now, right?)
